If the classification is late or wrong, equipment arrives with the wrong rating, cable routes cross zones they should avoid and buildings end up too close to release points. Fixing that during construction causes delay, rework and failed inspections, and getting it wrong in operation is a real safety risk.
USP&E Helps You Get Hazardous Areas Right the First Time
We know that on a campus build, schedule pressure is constant. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers design and build gas turbine plants where fuel gas safety is part of the layout from the first drawing. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
You do not have to choose between speed and safety. You need the classification done early, drawn on the real layout and carried into procurement, construction and O&M without gaps.
Identify Every Release Source Early
List every point on your power yard where fuel gas could escape: the gas reception and metering skid, filters and separators, pressure reduction, valves, flanges, vents, drains and the turbine enclosures. Include your future turbine blocks, because a zone that covers today’s empty pad will matter when the next block arrives.
Classify the zones around each source using the code that applies to your site. The result depends on how often a release might occur, how much gas could escape and how well the area is ventilated. An open, well-ventilated yard behaves very differently from an enclosure or a pit.
Do this work during layout, not after. On data centre power projects, the hazardous area drawing should sit beside the plot plan from the first review, so buildings, roads and cable routes are placed with the zones in view.
Draw the Zones on the Real Layout
Draw each zone on your layout and check what sits inside it. Control buildings, battery rooms, transformers and switchgear usually belong outside. Cable routes, lighting and instruments that must cross a zone need equipment rated for it. Moving a building ten metres on paper is free; moving it after the slab is poured is not.
Check your air intakes too. Building ventilation and turbine air intakes should not draw from areas where gas could collect. Vents and relief valves should discharge to safe locations away from people, intakes and ignition sources.
Coordinate with the wider balance of plant design. Pipe racks, drainage, fire water and electrical yards all interact with the zones, and a change in one discipline can move a boundary in another.
Select Rated Equipment and Keep Records Current
Select electrical and instrument equipment rated for each zone and write the rating into every purchase order. Check certificates on delivery and inspect installation, because a correctly rated device installed with the wrong gland is no longer safe.
Confirm enclosure ventilation, gas detection and the shutdown actions for each turbine block. Then keep your classification drawings and equipment register current through construction, commissioning and O&M. Every change, from a new instrument to a moved valve, should be checked against the zones before it is made.
The same discipline applies to every gas-fired block on your campus: a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, used/new gas turbines, natural gas engines/stations, or the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA. In hyperscale EPC/O&M, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute bring more gas onto site than most buildings ever see. For turbine selection, see our sister site on new gas turbine generators.

FAQ: Campus Hazardous Area Classification GT Build
What is hazardous area classification on a power yard?
USP&E describes hazardous area classification as mapping where fuel gas could be present and how often. Each release source gets a zone, and equipment inside that zone must be rated so it cannot ignite gas. It shapes layout, procurement and maintenance on every gas-fired plant.
When should hazardous areas be classified on a campus build?
USP&E classifies hazardous areas during early layout, alongside the plot plan. That way buildings, cable routes and air intakes are placed with the zones in view. Doing it late often means moving equipment, changing cable routes or replacing devices with the wrong rating.
Which equipment must be rated for hazardous zones?
USP&E checks every electrical and instrument item that sits inside a zone, including motors, lights, junction boxes, sensors and their cable glands. Each must carry a rating suitable for the zone, with certificates checked on delivery and installation inspected before the plant is commissioned.
How do future turbine blocks affect classification?
USP&E includes planned future blocks when classifying a campus yard. A future block’s release sources may create zones over today’s empty pads, roads or cable routes. Planning for them now avoids rework and keeps expansion fast when the next block is ordered.
Where are USP&E’s offices for data centre campus work?
USP&E supports data centre campus builds from Colorado Springs and Knoxville, close to US hyperscale projects. London structures contracts and finance, Johannesburg and Cape Town add engineering and project depth, and Wuxi follows up skids and switchgear made in China.
Has USP&E delivered gas turbine projects before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. Public case studies also include zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 units for NEOM and a 32 MW MAN plant redeployed across four countries to Iraq.
Is USP&E a broker for campus power equipment?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E designs, builds and maintains gas turbine plants with its own engineers, so the team that classifies your hazardous areas is the same team that builds the yard, maintains it and answers for it in operation.
How fast can USP&E respond to a layout review?
USP&E can review your plot plan and fuel gas design as soon as you share them. Engineers flag the conflicts most likely to cause rework first, such as buildings or intakes inside zones, so you can fix them before construction starts.
