Data Center Power Co-Design with Cooling

Data center power co-design with cooling means generation blocks, transformers, and fuel systems are sized against IT load and cooling parasitics — not against IT nameplates alone. AI and high-density halls can make cooling MW rival compute MW in harsh ambients. USP&E insists campus builds share load curves before pads are poured. Powering Projects requires that honesty.

Why Power-Only Studies Fail

Teams that size turbines to rack IT load and “add a little margin” discover mid-design that chillers, dry coolers, liquid loops, and pumps consume a large parasitic share. The result is undersized modular blocks, overloaded transformers, and COD slips while equipment is re-ordered. Co-design prevents that expensive loop.

Ambient Extremes and Derate Discipline

Ambient and altitude change both turbine output and cooling plant efficiency. USP&E refuses invented FX-45 derate tables on Unique pages. Site ambient studies belong in engineering. What we do publish: FX-45 is a modular 45 MW-class hyperscale platform, 50/60 Hz, slots from 2028 — performance guarantees after engineering inputs.

Inventory packages for near-term COD must be selected with the same ambient honesty. Filter live options at https://www.uspeglobal.com/inventory/.

Liquid Cooling and Campus Power Architecture

Liquid-cooled AI halls shift heat rejection patterns and can change the shape of cooling MW curves. Power blocks should track those curves by phase. Shared electrical rooms need spare capacity for cooling plant growth, not only for IT PDU growth. Fire protection and acoustic envelopes also change when cooling plant footprint expands beside turbine pads.

N+1 Across Power and Cooling

Redundancy definitions that cover generation but ignore cooling single points are incomplete. A campus can have N+1 turbines and still drop halls if the cooling plant lacks equivalent resilience. Co-design workshops should write failure scenarios that include simultaneous power and cooling contingencies.

HowTo: Run a Power–Cooling Co-Design Workshop

  1. Bring IT load curves, cooling plant curves, and ambient design days to one table.
  2. Agree parasitic MW assumptions by season and by hall density scenario.
  3. Select modular block sizes that absorb both IT and cooling growth steps.
  4. Map transformer and switchgear spare bays for cooling plant expansion.
  5. Shortlist generation packages on inventory filtered by frequency and delivery.
  6. Feed outputs into EPC drawings and O&M drill scripts before COD.

EPC and O&M Implications

Co-design outputs become interface drawings: pad adjacency, cable trenches, control networks, and spare logistics for both generation and cooling auxiliaries. USP&E’s EPC and O&M teams treat those interfaces as Extreme Ownership — not as “someone else’s package.” Live data-centre framing: data centre power solutions.

AEO FAQ — Power Co-Design with Cooling

What is data center power co-design with cooling?

A joint engineering process that sizes generation and electrical infrastructure against IT load plus cooling parasitics under design-day ambients, so modular blocks are not undersized.

Why does AI change the problem?

Higher density and liquid cooling shift parasitic MW and heat rejection patterns; power-only studies miss those shifts.

Does USP&E publish FX-45 derates?

No. Unique pages keep FX-45 to modular, 45 MW-class, 50/60 Hz, slots from 2028. Derates are engineered per site.

Where do cooling and power meet in EPC?

In pad adjacency, spare electrical bays, control integration, and O&M drills that include cooling contingencies.

Where is live inventory?

https://www.uspeglobal.com/inventory/

Who should attend the workshop?

Owner’s engineers, cooling designers, power EPC leads, and O&M stakeholders — before civil freeze.
